Be sure your plumbing pipe repair (REPIPE) is done in compliance with all local codes.  Get the permit...get the inspection**... get the GREEN TAG! **Not all plumbers permit repiping jobs, even though a permit is required by the State of Arizona.  Also, some plumbing companies do their own, in-house "inspections".  These do not meet the local code requirements, and do not give you the assurance you deserve that your completed job has met all safety and health codes.  When the city or county inspects your job, they will provide you with a GREEN TAG, letting you know the job was properly permitted, and passed the legal inspection.  Be sure you get the GREEN TAG!

SHOULD YOU REPIPE IN COPPER OR PEX? PEX (crosslink Polyethelene) pipe has become very popular in recent years, rapidly replacing copper piping in many residential applications.  While many homeowners are familiar with copper pipe, they may be unfamiliar with PEX and unaware of the benefits of repiping in PEX. Copper pipe has been around for years and has significantly replaced galvanized piping, once used extensively in residential plumbing but rarely used today.  Copper is a durable metal, resistant to ultraviolet rays, and therefore well suited to exterior as well an interior applications.  It is resistant to bacterial growth.  And soft copper is easy to install.  However, copper can corrode over time depending on the local water conditions.  Here in the Phoenix valley, many areas have high PH, highly acidic water which tends to lead to corrosion in copper piping.   PEX piping is also very durable - for interior applications (PEX pipe will react to ultraviolet rays and should not be used out of doors).  For interior use, however, PEX is an excellent choice.  PEX is flexible, allowing it to expand and contract with changing temperatures and allowing for pressure balancing in your home.  It is easier to install, and requires fewer fittings, making it also faster to install.  This makes PEX REPIPING more affordable than COPPER REPIPING, especially as copper has become quite expensive.  PEX will not deteriorate, or corrode, in high PH water conditions.  PEX also has a very long expected useful life - as much as 75 years.  The disadvantages to using PEX include its inappropriateness for exterior applications, and the fact that it is not contaminant resistant, as copper is.
